Summary: Solar activity continues to increase after a two-year solar minimum that ranks among the century's deepest. The return of sunspots and a resurgent solar wind is good news for aurora watchers, who are seeing some of the best displays since ~2006. See also August 2010.

Promising measurement of the activity earlier in the evening, made us hopeful when we started the chase for the Northern lights. First we. my guests and I, went to see and photograph the sunset(who last for hours so far north as Tromsø). When it was dark enough(approx 21.30), the show started. According the the measurement it must have been a good show in the early evening before it was dark enough to see it. Anyway, a very good night with 3-4 band, fast moving rays in the southern part of the sky with purple color on the upper part. Canon EOS 5D mkII, EF24mm/f1.4, ISO 500, f1.6, 4-8 sec.

My wife and I were celebrating our three year wedding anniversary in one of our favorite camping spots when a huge aurora display erupted overhead. We were hoping for an aurora that night, but we did not expect anything like this. Thanks to our friends at spaceweather.com for the heads up!! Shot with a Nikon D3000 and a 24mm 1.8

Second night of the Aurora Photography Tour, Aurora started to shine early at around 22:30. Fast moving Breakups danced above us before 02:00 briefly before the clouds moved in.

We had a beautiful, cloudless evening yesterday which looked quite promising for auroras. Around 10pm it began with some small green bands. At 11pm the displays were very intense and around midnight to whole sky overhead was filled with fast moving green and some purple auroras. As always a breathtaking experience!
