Summary: The deepest solar minimum in nearly 100 years has not put a stop to Northern Lights around the Arctic Circle. The geomagnetic field has been quite active this month, producing displays of particular beauty over Scandinavia. See also Oct. 2009.

Tonight the skies over the Pangnirtung Fjord (Baffin Island, Canada's Arctic) were once again filled with dancing lights. The aurora continue to dazzle this week and tonights half moon provided the ideal lighting conditions to photograph them as they graced our winter skies. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for more lights in the coming days.

Photo details: Nikon D700 and 14-28mm lens (8-10secs, 1200 ASA).

The aurora arrived this morning after I got a brief 3 minute show prior to the main show. There were rays, arcs, curtains, and pulsating curtains.

Photo details: Canon Rebel XT, 400 ASA. Time unrecorded.

Fairly consistent static bands of aurora with brief moments of moderate activity over a several hour period. Good moonlight earlier in the night, producing nice blue skies. Some color later, including orange, which was fast moving requiring the higher ISO's (6400) to capture.

Photo details: Nikon D3, 14-24mm f2.8. ISO's 1600-6400 1.5-8 secs.

Finally, after too much time, the sky was almost clear. So, with friends, we went to watch the northern lights and to take some pictures.

Photo details: Canon EOS 30D, 10mm, f3.5, 800 ISO, 15 sec. and fisheye 16mm, f 2.8, 800 ISO, 15 sec.
