A friend and I were out shooting the Northern Lights, and we figured they had just about died down so we drove back home. As I was pulling out of the driveway, I received a call from another friend who told me to "Look up..." I did and my jaw dropped. The most spectacular auroras were lacing all over the sky! Cyans, pinks, blues, greens! I ran back to get my shooting partner, and drove my car right through his garbage cans in a rush to park.

Although we missed the grandest display of the colors, we managed to take some good pictures. We were out till 3:30 am and half-falling asleep shooting these lights, on the edge of a cliffside about 30kms outside of the town of Fort Smith, NWT. It was worth it, and at one point the aurora bleached the sky for miles and miles with her colors and her dance. Two of these shots (bow shaped one with trees and colorful splash of Northern Lights) were taken within town limits, and the other two (cliff and cabin) were taken about 30 kms south of the town.

Tonight, (because of the Valentine's day), the Northern Lights were very excited. They were dancing in the sky, with a lot of colours. Bonus : Venus was also the witness of the beautiful dance.

The Northern Lights covered most of the sky in Southeast Alaska last night. The lights were fairly static, but very colorful as these images from northern Lynn Canal show. We saw some very nice reflections on the Inside Passage.

As promised by Spaceweather, some nice Northern Lights came for Valentine's Day. It was a short, but intense display with some nice red colour that I unfortunately was to late to capture with the camera.
