Dr Philips, You currently have a headline about comet Hartley's tail begining to emerge. The dust tail has been prominant in my images for over a week now. The trick to see the dust tail ... some simple data rejection processing of moving stars in a 3 hour sequence of 92 x 2 minute images and viola the comet appears by itself with a dust tail easily observable. My image is from 00:00UT to 03:00UT morning of 30th September 2010. The ion tail BTW is currently highly foreshortened and pointing away from earth at the present time.
