January 2008

Summary: In January 2008, sky watchers across Scandinavia witnessed an unusual number of nacreous clouds. After mid-month, hardly a night went by without someone spotting the telltale mother-of-pearl colors in the sky; particularly vivid displays occurred on Jan. 19-21 and Jan. 24-26. These clouds are supposed to be rare and the sudden abundance is a puzzle. [comments]

WOW! Another evening with Nacreous clouds, it´s almost hard to believe! Today I had great formations, movement and colors of the clouds and I photographed using a 75-300mm Carl Zeiss objective and a Canon Digital Rebel XT on a tripod.

Another evening with a beautiful nacreous clouds (the fourth such display within the past week!) The images were taken over a time span of 50 minutes and illustrate how the colors of the clouds changed in the fading twilight. At one point a flock of birds appeared in front of the clouds, adding depth to the image.

Photo details: Nikon D70, ISO 200 (except final image, which was at ISO 800), exposure times ranging from 1/640s to 1/15s (final image)

This is the third occurrence of nacreous clouds over southeastern Norway in less than a week! Not quite as strong as the display on January 20th, but better than the one on January 19th. The beautiful color play in the clouds kept going for about one hour after sunset, the colors getting more intense as the twilight deepened. Photo details: Nikon D70, ISO 200, 1/100s exposure

At sunrise today I saw a band of clouds just above the setting moon. I was certain it was Nacreous clouds. Alas - I had to go to work, but brought the camera, as I had a hunch there would be some nice sunset viewings. The band of clouds was almost stationary throughout the day and when the sun was setting, all the iridescent Mother of Pearl colors started to appear. The forecast is more strong southwestern winds the next 2-3 days, so there might be more in the days ahead. Nikon D70, ISO 400, various exp. times.

These were fantastic colorful (and huge) nacreous clouds. There were internal 'waves' which you can't really see in the images. These were captured with a camera phone (HTC 710), so they're not fantastic, but they do convey the brightness of these clouds in the dawn sky.
