The Taurids: Nov. 4-12, 2008

  Summary: 2008 is a "swarm year" for the Taurids: Between Nov. 5th and 12th, Earth is due to pass through a swarm of gritty debris from parent comet 2P/Encke. When the same thing happened in 2005, sky watchers observed a slow drizzle of midnight fireballs for nearly two weeks. Be alert for Taurids: sky map.

I caught a very long and bright Taurid Meteor; it lit up the sky!

Fish eye shot of brillant Taurid low in north. We took 90 images from 7pm to 4 am and only one had a Taurid. Also included is a intensity trace across the meteor.

I used my fisheye lens last night to have a better chance at catching one of those fireballs and it paid off. Here are the best couple of pictures. The first one had a easily visible trail for 14 minutes. Both were captured on November 8 between 5am and 630am. More pics from the last two days are here.
