Summary: Solar activity continues to increase after a two-year solar minimum that ranks among the century's deepest. The return of sunspots and a resurgent solar wind is good news for aurora watchers, who are seeing some of the best displays since ~2006. See also August 2010.

Amazing - aurora in Denmark again. Last time was aug. 4th. and now again in october, we are lucky to see it in Denmark so strong and clear after only a few months. It was just a short burst for 5 to 10 minutes. The movie shows the start from the green "cloud" to the dancing aurora. from 23:13 to 23:18 local time (GMT+1). I used a Canon DSLR 1D IV with EF 24mm 1,4L. iso 4000 8 sec. exposure at f/2,8

These images were shot just outside the city of Tromsø on Oct.11th 2010, using a Canon 5D Mark II + Canon EF 24mm Mark II @ f/1.4 / ISO2000 /2.5 - 4sec exposure. Been really cloudy in northern Norway this autumn and lately, and october 11th 2010 was no exception. Very cloudy, but I took the chance and drove out to a nearby location called Kattfjordeidet. After waiting for a while I got a few shots towards Tromsø. The clouds are polluted by light from the city. Normally I try to avoid this, but tonight on this specific location I had no choice. The results were colorful auroras surrounded by colored/polluted clouds. The result was not bad at all :)

Finally some really bright northern lights for this winter. The auroras passed the zenith and were on the whole night. We also had the first snow and frost so this winter now has properly started in Porjus, Swedish Lapland.
