Summary: Solar activity continues to increase after a two-year solar minimum that ranks among the century's deepest. The return of sunspots and a resurgent solar wind is good news for aurora watchers, who are seeing some of the best displays since ~2006. See also October 2010.

I chose to call the first shot 'Not Alone' for three reasons. First, in an almost religious context; when you get to experience something like this, you can't help but thinking that we as a race are not alone, something or somebody must be the reason for the creation of such overwhelming beauty, beyond the sun. Secondly, the old abandoned house is alone, but with the aurora above it certainly is not. Third; most commonly there's a single ray of white/purple aurora, but here there was two, one moving faster than the other, but both just as amazing. If I sound a little religious or far out, that's because when I experience this, I am! The aurora was nothing but amazing, green, white, purple, moving fast and strong.

Goodbye Sun ! Today, the Sun climbed over the mountains for the last time of the year here on Kvaløya, Northern Norway, not to return until next year. Instead we enter the polar darkness, which is not necessarily that dark. Here is a shot from today/tonight (15 Nov 2010) at around 12 in the day and around 00 in the night in the same direction. Green replaces yellow. Nikon D3, Nikkor 300mm, Nikkor 20mm, various settings

Traveling 3500km to see the auroras and on his last night before flying back home, beautiful auroras prevented our guest to sleep early and had to jump out of his bed again to enjoy the final and spectacular show.

The Aurora seems to show according to the forecast that is made from the solar activity here at Spaceweather. So tonight it was just to brew some coffee and get outside into the coldness. We had -10C so it was not bad. These images are taken at Kattfjord on the island of Kvaløya. This is the shipping area to the quarry above the road. So you can see the conveyor system that fills up the ships. Used the Canon EOS 5D mkII and the Canon 24mm f/1.4
