November 2006

Summary: A solar wind stream hit Earth on Nov. 23rd. The impact caused a minor (Kp=5) geomagnetic storm and auroras at high latitudes. A week later, on Nov. 30th, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) near Earth tilted south, opening a crack in Earth's defenses against the solar wind. Auroras were photographed as far south as Wisconsin.

Even though the wind chill factor was around zero, and the wind was pushing waves onto the cliff beneath me overlooking Lake Wissota, I decided to tough it out and take some pictures.

I was heading home from church when I noticed the aurora was very active. As usual, I ripped the camera gear out of the trunk and snapped away!

It was partly cloudy over Yellowknife. I saw green auroras shining through the clouds. It was 1 a.m. on the 24th of November.

Faint auroras were out most of the night. Bright streaks appeared with some pinkish colour briefly. Got one bright shooting star going through the aurora tonight!

Great auroras tonight. Most of the northern sky was covered with pale arcs. Active periods were short but very intense.

I woke up around 1:30am, glanced out the window and was pleasantly surprised by aurora activity. At first I didn't think I would photograph it because the temperature was below 0 outside, but I went ahead anyway and am quite happy I did.
