Northern lights from Barrow? Berkeley? No, Borrego Springs in the heart of the Anza-Borrego Desert of Southern California! After completing an outdoor workshop in sky photography, I returned home to find a diffuse glow in the north and very obvious rays reaching up well above Polaris (33 degrees up). Photo details: Canon 10D, 400 ISO, 10s-20s with 24mm lens at f/1.4

A friend called me at 1:30 am to report bright dancing lights in the sky. I quickly got dressed and drove to a hill top not far from my home in Rapid City to take these pictures. Auroras seldom appear this far south and I haven't seen any this bright since last November's X-class storm. The aurora moved quickly, waving back and fourth in a curtain from the eastern horizon to the west over the Black Hills. Straight overhead it pulsed in bright white light changing shapes as the curtain crossed it's path.

The evening began cloudy with a quiet green glow to the northeast. Around 2:00 am the breakup was fabulous! Photos taken with a Nikon D70 and 10.5 mm lens.
