Summary: Solar activity continues to increase after a two-year solar minimum that ranks among the century's deepest. The return of sunspots and a resurgent solar wind is good news for aurora watchers, who are seeing some of the best displays since ~2006. See also March. 2010.

Tonight the storm hit the Earth with full force, producing some of the nicest auroras of the whole season. The last 3-4 days have been incredible with very intense and very colourful auroras moving around in all directions of the sky. Tonight they were moving so fast I didn`t stand a chance of capturing what they actually looked like, but exposure times had to go down to just a couple of seconds due to the brightness of both the night sky and the auroras, and never before have I been able to watch auroras without freezing, which is a completely new experience to me. Solar maximum or minimum, who cares on a night like this - the night sky simply doesn`t get any more beautiful than this. Nikon D3, Nikkor 20mm f/2.8, 2-8 sec exposures at ISO 500-800.

After a long spell without any auroras worth mentioning we finally got some nicer displays again as far south as Trondheim. Was real good to see them again! This shot was taken with a Canon 5D mark II, a 24mm f/1.4LII lens, and a two stop ND grad filter (to darken the city lights). ISO1600, 1s, f/1.4

The Aurora displays last night was fabulous! At Stokmarknes airport I shot theese images. One shows a nuclear mushroom heading towards great bear. Another picture shows a ghost in the sky. Both great shapes.
