Northern Lights Photo Gallery
April 2009

Summary: April opened with no strong geomagnetic storms, but a persistent "shimmer" of photogenic Northern Lights around the Arctic Circle. Springtime favors auroras, and this is part of that year-in-year-out seasonal display. See also March 2009.

I was waiting for the moon to come up, hoping for a good photographic scene as I had last Easter (Space weather Moon halo 27.04.2008). But clouds were blocking the moon, so I tried to photograph the earth rotation. I used a small tripod, put it up behind treeline because of strong northerly wind. Two of the photographs were ok and I submit them here. I positioned the camera so a flagpole pointed at the Polaris. The photographs were colored in green and purple by auroras. In photo 1 a line on the left side of the photo shows a satellite or some object flairing not in line with the rotation.

Photo details: Canon 30D using 10-22 lens on small shaky tripod in strong wind. 400ASA with 24minutes and 52 minutes exposure.

After climbing a mountain to be in the dark (without light pollution), we went yesterday in another place with some friends. It was a clear sky with a beautiful moon. Gilles Boutin and I had the chance to take more pictures of the northern lights of Salluit.

Photo details: Canon EOS 30D, 10mm, f3.5, 800 ISO, 10 sec.
