AROUND THE BEND: On July 20th, a powerful X3-class solar flare erupted from a spot just behind the Sun's southeastern limb. The explosion, which was most intense at 2130 UT (2:30 p.m. PDT), caused an R3-category radio blackout across North America and the Pacific Ocean. The active region that unleashed the blast will rotate into view later today.

WEEKEND AURORAS: A coronal mass ejection swept past Earth late Friday (July 19th). In its wake came a fast and gusty solar wind stream that buffeted our planet's magnetic field for much of the weekend.

Observers in Canada spotted faint Northern Lights on Saturday and Sunday. Photographer Dominic Cantin recorded these Northern Lights over the Laurentides wildlife reserve, 75 km north of Québec City on July 20th. [more images]

BIG SUNSPOT: Sunspot 30--formerly a giant "naked-eye" spot--has decayed substantially since Friday. It still has a twisted magnetic field, however, that poses a threat for X-class flares. Meanwhile, sunspot 36 has grown to become the largest spot on the Sun. It also poses a threat for X-flares. You can see these spots yourself--but never stare directly at our star. Use safe solar projection methods.
