METEOR WATCH: On May 31st, Earth will pass five million miles from the dusty orbit of comet 73P/Schwassmann Wachmann 3. The great distance means a meteor shower is unlikely; but 73P is such a strange comet that even the unlikely is possible. Be alert for meteors slowly cutting across the sky in the nights ahead: sky map.

IN SEARCH OF MARS: Looking for Mars? It's right beside the Moon. When the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look west. The crescent Moon and Mars will be there, hanging side-by-side above the glow of the setting sun. Mars is not very bright, but the Moon will guide you directly to it: sky map.

MESSY SUN: Four hundred years ago, when Galileo first sketched sunspots, he stunned orthodox thinkers. The heavenly sun was supposed to be pristine--not peppered with a bunch of enormous blemishes.

Little did they know. If Galileo had had an H-alpha filter, he would have really stunned the orthodoxy. Modern solar telescopes reveal the sun as a fantastically messy place:

This picture, taken yesterday by Robert Arnold on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, shows a sunspot the size of Earth, several long dark filaments and, underneath it all, a "shag carpet" of boiling granules. Not shown, but present off-screen, is a blazing prominence.

Pristine? No. Just plain heavenly.



Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are space rocks larger than approximately 100m that can come closer to Earth than 0.05 AU. None of the known PHAs is on a collision course with our planet, although astronomers are finding new ones all the time.
