SUITSAT: A strange satellite is about to go into Earth orbit. It's "SuitSat," an empty spacesuit thrown overboard from the International Space Station. Using a simple police scanner or ham radio, you can listen to SuitSat when it orbits over your hometown.

SATURN AT ITS BEST: Get out your telescope. Tonight, Saturn is at opposition, which means it's at its closest, biggest and brightest for the entire year. There's never a better time to see the planet's exquisite rings.

Saturn rises in the east after sunset (it looks like a bright yellow star) and soars overhead at midnight. You'll find it in the constellation Cancer just below the Beehive star cluster: sky map.

SUN PILLAR: The sun was rising in New Albany, Ohio, yesterday when Ed Kreminski and sons spotted a bright shaft of light leaping up from the eastern horizon. "My youngest son thought it looked like a fiery tornado."

In fact, it was a sun pillar. Ice crystals floating in cold morning clouds caught the rays of the rising sun and spread them into a narrow up-and-down shaft of light.

"My older son was on his way to his school's spelling bee and thought it might be a good omen," Kreminski continues. Maybe it was. "He placed second in his grade and so moves on to the next round of competition."

Kreminski's motto: "Don't leave home without your camera."



Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are space rocks larger than approximately 100m that can come closer to Earth than 0.05 AU. None of the known PHAs is on a collision course with our planet, although astronomers are finding new ones all the time.
