MARS ARRIVES: On Tuesday night (Aug. 26th) and Wednesday morning (Aug. 27th), Earth and Mars are going to have a historic close encounter--the closest in almost 60,000 years. Go outside around midnight, look south and up. Mars will be the brightest object in the sky.

AURORA SEASON: In less than one month Northern autumn will begin--and that means aurora season is beginning, too. Geomagnetic storms tend to be most intense during the weeks around the September equinox because the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) near Earth tips farther south than usual. South-pointing IMFs encourage auroras. Already in August, sky watchers from Alaska to Arizona have been enjoying colorful Northern Lights. SPACE STATION TRANSIT: Usually when people spot the International Space Station (ISS), it's glowing in the night sky. On August 16th, however, Roland Stalder of Lucerne, Switzerland, photographed the ISS in broad daylight--when it passed directly between him and the sun. (continued below)

Stalder's video of the event, which you can see by clicking on the composite image above, is probably the finest such movie ever recorded. "This was my first ISS-transit observation and I am quite speechless about it," he says. Stalder knew when to the ISS would cross the sun thanks to Thomas Fly's email transit-alert service.



Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are space rocks larger than approximately 100m that can come closer to Earth than 0.05 AU. None of the known PHAs are on a collision course with our planet, although astronomers are finding new ones all the time.
